Why is multi-culturalism held out to be?

so self-evidently such a 'good thing'? It seems to me that the one essential ingredient necessary for the survival of a society,country,nation,whatever,is unity in all things,not fragmentation. Do you,as I,think multi-culturalism is a trojan horse,smuggled into formerly genous and successful Western Christian cultures in order to undermine and finally to bring them down?
