Why do some Americans think they are more free than the British because they can bear arms?

In the UK it is not illegal to own a gun you simply need a license to own a gun but you need a very good reason in order to get the licence. Whereas in the USA they have a right to bear arms according to their consitution (correct me if im wrong). In reality it is not like the general public with arms can fight against the millatary (one with the highsest spending) so I dont see why you feel more free with guns. And no the UK is not socialist we may face a bit of dictatorship from the EU and other few socialist elements but overall this country is capatilist.
