Appliance off a switch instead of plug?

Ok, I'm in the UK and have just purchased an electric fire. It runs from a plug but close to where I want to install it is an old switch which used to operate a back boiler (now removed). The switch has been plain plated but I was wondering if I could buy a switch and run the appliance from there?
